Influence of Family Life Satisfaction on Suicide Ideation among Korean Adults

Abstract
Objectives : We tried to investigate the prevalence of 1-year suicide ideation and the influence of family life satisfaction on 1-year suicideal ideation among Korean adults.

Methods : We used secondary data of the Korean Social Survey (2010). Data of this study consists of 33,757 individuals aged 20 and over. We used questionnaires developed by the Korea Statistical Office to collect information on sociodemographic and health related factors, family life satisfaction and suicide ideation, we performed chi-square test and a multiple logistic regression analysis.

Results : The prevalence of suicidal ideation in Korean adult is 7.6% in total, 6.3% in male, 8.7% in female. Family life satisfaction was significantly effect on 1-year suicidal ideation after controlling other confounding variables including age, sex, life satisfaction, morbidity, general stress, marital status, education, perceived health status, and economic activity.
Conclusion : Family life satisfaction or family support were found to be a significant correlate of 1-year suicide ideation among Korean adults. A variety of supports to enhance family cohesion and family relation including sociocultural and political policies and programs could reduce the risk of having suicide ideation among Korea adults.
